Seirei Gensouki—fully titled “Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles Another Tale”—is a free adventure video game wherein you can experience and enjoy the fantastical world of an isekai story. Developed by CTW, this 2D role-playing game is based on the Japanese light novel, Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles, and features its huge cast of characters.

As an auto-battle and gacha game, Seirei Gensouki offers easy gameplay mechanics that don’t require you to focus. Due to this and the minimal tutorial you get, it’s also hard to become invested in the story and characters themselves—especially if you’re not familiar with the source material.

Another adventure for Rio

Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles is a Japanese light novel series written by Yuri Kitayama and illustrated by Riv. First serialized in 2014, it follows the story of the orphan boy Rio, who discovers that he is the reincarnation of a young man named Haruto Amakawa from another world—and that he actually possesses powerful magical abilities. The series’ success led to it being given both a manga and anime adaptation. 

It’s the anime that the game, Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles Another Tale, takes inspiration from. Here, you play as one of the three playable original characters called the “Leaders.” During one skirmish near a magical tree, you encounter Rio and his friends who have been transported to your world. You take them under your wing after this—and the road to collecting various companions begins.

However, like other hero-collection games with this type of auto-battling feature, the plot isn’t really engaging and the tutorial hardly explains the in-depth mechanics involved. Additionally, this game can be played on a browser since it uses G123, a Japanese HTML5 gaming service—however, it’s recommended to enable a VPN along with it. This is because the game language is set to Japanese and can’t be changed in the settings.

A tribute to the fans

All in all, Seirei Gensouki is a great game to try out on both PC and mobile if you’re a fan of the anime series. Not only does it offer the beloved cast as collectible units, but it also lets you explore a new world alongside them. Just make sure to use a VPN in order to change the default language to English.
